Cleaning and caring for your wool hat is simple but there are definitely some dos and don’ts that will help your hat retain its shape, color, and wow factor through many years of wearing. 

Here’s what you need to know.

Do

✓ Make sure your hands are clean before handling your hat. Dirt, oil, dust, and other stuff that sticks to your hand can transfer to your hat and absorb into the delicate wool. 

✓ Use a soft bristle brush or lint roller to pick up dust, hair, and other small debris that collects on your wool hat. 

✓ Use a felt sponge to dab away small stains. Then let it air dry away from direct sunlight. 

✓ Take your hat to a hat repair shop for a professional cleaning when it needs a thorough cleaning or has a serious stain. 

✓ Handle your hat with care. The brim and crown can lose their shape if they’re handled roughly, so treat your hat with reverence.

Don’t

X Expose your hat to water. Moisture can stain, damage, and warp the natural fabric of a wide-brim wool hat. 

X Blow dry your hat or use a steam cleaner on it. The heat and moisture will interfere with the shape and structure of your hat. 

X Let your hat get noticeably dirty before cleaning it. Give it a brush-up every so often to keep buildup in check and avoid having to do a deep cleaning that can be harder on the natural wool fabric.
