How to Measure Your Head for the Right Hat Size

So you’ve decided to order a custom hat, and you want it to fit just right.

If you’ve never measured your head for hat sizing before, you’ve come to the right people, because we live and breathe modern hats, and we understand how crucial it is to get the absolute perfect fit.

The awesome news is that it’s extremely simple. All you have to do is make one decision, follow two steps, and, boom, you’re on your way to hat heaven.

Deciding how you want your hat to fit

The two most popular ways to wear a hat are the city style and the western style.

City Style

The city style has your hat sitting level on your head with the band resting just above your eyebrows for a sexy and mysterious look.

Western Style

The western style has your hat cocked back slightly, with the band hitting your hairline in a rakish, dapper way.

Choose your hat style and then grab your measuring tape and follow the steps below.

How to measure your head for a custom hat

1. Grab a flexible measuring tape or a long piece of string.

2. Place one end of the tape on the furthest part of the back of your head and bring the other end around to the center of your forehead, keeping it about a quarter-inch above your ears.

For the city style fit:

Wrap the tape measure around your head, with the end hitting just above your eyebrows.

For the western style fit:

Wrap the tape measure around the bottom of your head, with the end hitting your hairline.

Bonus tips for getting the perfect fit for your wide-brim hat

Make sure the measuring tape is taut but not tight when you’re measuring, since you want your hat to fit comfortably without squeezing your head.

If you find that your head is in between sizes, choose the bigger size. Any extra roominess can be made up for with an adjustable sweatband.
